The double red lights mean the lock is not in service. Not what we want to see. A single red means the lock is operational but is not ready for us. A simultaneous red and green means the lock is being readied – either being emptied of filled. A single green, what we want to see when we’re holding position outside the lock, means the gates are fully open and we can enter. Our fingers are crossed – hoping that double-red will soon disappear.
With time on our hands, we did try one of the restaurants shown at the end of the previous chapter. After all, we didn’t have far to walk.
It was pizza night. They were excellent – but not quite the same as dinner at La Table de Cassan.
At night, those restaurants were all packed.
