France has more than 8,000 kilometres of waterways – a series of connected rivers and canals.
We could see a lot of France as we cruise on Aleau. But not all of it. Not even close. Plus there are the winters when we can’t cruise at all. What to do?
We decided to buy a used car – a 2018 Peugeot 308 SW – GT Line. The SW stands for station-wagon. We need a station wagon to carry jerry-cans full of diesel to fill up our red tank so we have heat during the winter – not to mention picking up guests and their suitcases at the train station – whenever it’s safe to have guests.
We are still in lockdown – although the amount of time we can be away from home (Aleau) has been increased to three hours – and we’re allowed to travel a bit farther than the initial 1 km.
We can hop in Peugey (as we call her) and take one of the roads out of Auxonne.
Perhaps to Peintre – 7 km. from Auxonne.
Or hang a right in Peintre and go another 2 km. to Chevigny.
Or we could continue on to Dole, population 23,000. It’s 19 km. from Auxonne.
We found a nearby bench – great place to eat our chocolate and enjoy the view.
But we don’t need Peugey to get to Dole. The Canal du Rhône au Rhin will take us to the centre of town.
