Approaching Sens after an early-morning start from Villeneuve-sur-Yonne, a sight that triggered memories.
That yellow umbrella is at La Madeleine. In the previous chapter, I said that Auberge La Lucarne aux Chouettes in Villeneuve-sur-Yonne is one of our favourite restaurants. True. But I think that La Madeleine in Sens is one of our favourite favourites. Go back and take a look at Chapter 175 (Way down the page.) and you’ll see why. I think that when I saw that yellow umbrella, I began salivating.
As wonderful as it was, we weren’t going back to La Madeleine. We were going to try something new.
Mauvaises Herbes doesn’t sound inviting – not as the name of a restaurant. According to Google Translate it means weeds. (I wanted to double-check my translation – just to be sure. It appears I was not mistaken. Mauvaises herbes means weeds.) I think a more accurate translation would have been “hard to find.” And that’s not just because it’s located far from the centre of Sens.
Above – with a “Mauvaises Herbes” sign propped against the archway – is the entrance to Mauvaises Herbes. Sort of. We needed to enter and walk along the path below. To the next sign.
And keep walking until the next sign. Propped against a recycling bin – just behind the shrub on the right.
We’re almost there. We then had to enter through the gate that had a construction permit attached to it.
And through a courtyard that would have been a lovely place to eat if it hadn’t been raining.
We finally made it inside. The interior matched the welcoming feeling of the courtyard. Unfortunately, there was no way to take a shot of it without intruding on the privacy of the other diners. But I did get some of what we had to eat.
Les Entrées…
Les Plats…
Les Desserts…
Oops. Once again, we dug in before remembering to take a shot. Les Mauvaises Herbes was not bad at all. Worth the hike.
