You’ve seen a few barges over the past 105 chapters. This one is a bit different. Even though it ends with an ‘S’, it’s singular. And doesn’t float.
Barges is a town 45 kilometres from Auxonne. With a name like that, we had to go see it. It’s not big – 637 people call it home. More than enough to have a church…
And a picturesque Main Street…
Ten kilometres from Barges is Gevrey-Chambertin – in the heart of Bourgogne wine country. In early cookbooks, Chambertin was the only wine to use when making Coq au Vin. It will still make for a delicious dinner – except it would be a very expensive one.
The streets of Gevrey-Chambertin have a familiar look to them.
Except almost every building either belongs to one of the vineyards or to a wine merchant.
I’m sure they were happy. This weekend was the first in an awful long time that outdoor dining – and wine drinking – has been allowed. Only one place was open – and it was packed.
Under a very grey sky, we looked at the vineyards – with new growth just starting to show.
And then it was time to head home. The sun had come out and the mustard fields had us thinking we were driving through a post card.
